Crime,Symbolism and Film Censorship

Here is probably not a new thought about ‘super heroes’ it poped into my head recently – Take Batman. A rich persons family get killed and son vows revenge. In the latest film ‘batman begins’ it is most likely that the economics of Gotham meant said rich person made those normal law abiding people poor because they could not compete with low wage countries – thus causing the crime epidemic.

Having done crime lets move along to symbolism and censorship.

One boring evening last week we where browsing rental dvd titles a came across a film called the beast, which was made in the 1970′s, but it was apparently too controversial and sometime in the 26 years gone by it finally got on to dvd. Did we rent – you bet we did!

Its the french chateaux setting, and a wedding is arranged. Naturally there are rumours of a lady desendant having had some hanky panky with a bear. It is mostly symbolic and done in dream sequences ‘now’, with ‘then’. there are hints of the erotic with some human interracial sex, and full on horse breeding.

Quite why this flick was banned makes me wonder about the censors. It also has a clasical claiver (?english piano) which i love, like Bach’s preludes and fugues. Not the normal thing we watch, If your up for being disgusted go and rent it. or buy it

With a 26 year wait, what more of a recommendation do you need?

  1. The version I saw on the Film Four Channel, was extremely explicit, showing the female vagina, and the beast’s penis (okay, it wasn’t real) erect and ejaculating. It’s not the usual fare you get in British cinema.
