Bananas in the Falklands

Book: Blackman

is isbn: 0575075139, and is written by Richard Morgan whom apparently picked up a gong for this. Unlike this (my blog) it revels in trying to be several forms of writing at once and getting them to work together.

Although it might be a pigeon holed form to some authors, writing is writing some of it is good, a lot of it is awful. Example: Fight scenes in books in my opinion just don’t work 99% of the time and Mr Morgan makes his work. Any writer who can not bore me during fight scenes or make me speed up over the ‘fight pages’ must be doing something right.

The book is a cross between a future, and a crime novel. It has a good dosage of death and gore and stops and asks a few pertinent questions about human evolution along the way.

Its put down of religions is class as well. Therefore I give it 4/5 Bananas.

It is a shame that other writers (see the link) fear both the ‘label’ and have a level of technophobia not to ask some questions about humans which writing can do to engage the reader. Some of us are not just cudlips* Jeanette.

update: The americans decided to rename this book ‘Thirteen’

* read the book to find out what it means.
