Kings (wiki) was a drama based on the tale of biblical king Saul (renamed here as Silas) who i am blissfully unaware of most of the details, David who murdered Goliath (which i know of) is also part of this tale.
The tale of kings is set in a contemporary world of tanks (think ww1) , america of the 1990′s.
The biblical morals are slightly lost and there’s a money lender and other ghosts, what is perverse is that politicians still seek the religious vote even today.
On an economics note it has a go at the divided country syndrome too – say Germany of the past, or Korea
The music is interesting, if brief, and the scope of the show is large that does not allow any small diversions. Unlike some religious utopia’s (say iran or margaret attwoods gilead from the handmaiden’s tale) the series is ambiguous on sex and is still conservative in its message and unwilling to offend.
The problem with kings is not the story but with the audience that tv thinks it needs. TV loves big viewing numbers, but in an age of multi tv channels that won’t normally happen so garbage like ‘dancing with chicken sexers’, or invent a popstar revision 9 means stuff like kings is doomed to failure.
In a way this west wing like drama captures a nightmarish world but ignores the humanity to its cost, bible freaks will say it takes too many interpretations, and i would say it is scared of offending anybody or taking a modern stand on the issues.
It has a tribute to Battlestar Galactica here in its style of shooting too, and uses some plot ideas from it as well in the governing council.
The program although only running for one season has some merit though helps illustrate the the retardness of both the modern politician and the average tv audience who can probably blame some idiot at a tv station for not advertising this or confusing its meaning with the wrong audience.
A second opinion described it as ‘wordy’, maybe it is, but theres not much leeway in something like Kings, but it sure beats dancing with chickens which most people watch.
A noble attempt 4/5 bananas.
