In the rose garden of the martyrs, Christopher de Bellaigue

isbn: 0007113935, who also wrote this which i reviewed (my blog). details life in Iran which updates Persepolis (my blog).

The writing in this book is more detailed than his second book reviewed above and introduces us to  some of the some of the people who live there.  The book brilliantly mixes a homage to catalonia with the iran/iraq war in one chapter and muddies the water that most ‘reformists’ where once hardliners.

Iran it appears is country of dubious origin and with its odd history seems doomed to be the oddity in the region gaining no friends and occasionally rattling its sabre while the revolution becomes more like shah’s  regime it apparently replaced with a 98% yes vote back in 1979.

The us republican party apparently gained much too from that revolution.

A little wordy in places  but well worth the read. 4/5 bananas.
