I have not watched much television of recent. Put simply there’s nothing on i deem of value to see. Don’t worry i have read some interesting books instead, despite what the bbc perceives as a ‘good’ book.
Bbc one is perhaps the weakest and has ruined a number of things that where on the bbc’s ‘lesser’ channels. Torchwood was scarified for five days burning on bbc one, never to reappear until the bloke who rescued Dr Who also left that and took his offshoot to America for rebooting after killing the cast off – very much slash and burn.
Another good example documented was ‘outcasts’ – that bsg thing (my blog) the writer has since explained elsewhere that he and the production side of things where ‘rushed’ into the series after the first episode was filmed. On reflection even after the bbc took an interest in it this seems plausible but with the weaknesses in back story and ship cargo containers for a set made me wonder if it had been thought out more then maybe it would not have been as crap.
However i am not sure that outcasts would never have been a success. Old poetry and children in s/f just don’t go together. OK yes so i do like s/f things and i know that future plot thing is a means to get the story moving and that warp/ftl isn’t s/f or a hated genre but a great way to do drama is a means to an end.
Fortunately dr who seems un-wreckable in its current setup despite Americanising it for new audience, although the bbc have wrecked it before so it seems that this will be the only thing i will be watching on it.
It is most amusing when the bbc does a child friendly dr who episode (pirates) and puts it out at 21:00 in the states, when clearly the audience is not aged 5. That probably is most visible ‘misunderstanding’ between the different bits of the bbc and there wants.
Amusing as it might be the Americans cannot get there heads around the facts that many of the props and designs in it are designed by human children. This perhaps illustrates the gap between the native audience and the new,
Quite why your average bbc one viewer likes the crap usually shown on it is probably a good barometer of taste as to why outcasts failed. Who was to blame for it well the lack of coherent plot and bbc one schedulers between have more than enough fail points between them.
Perhaps its best that s/f stays off bbc one knowing the stupidity of both average viewers* and the idiotic things bbc one people do to s/f.
*soaps set in a pub and a hospital, which even outcasts had.
