Saving bricks and mortar retail

Mary Portas writes for the daily telegraph and somehow made the leap to television as a retail consultant for the tax avoiding charity shop which has helped to kill the high street.  She is a ‘name’ and despite me telling you what she has done i have not seen her doing it because well honesty who cares.

She has now been asked to save the high street after making charity shops hip.  Which double standard raises a few issues.  I do not like shopping to start with but assume for a moment our hp inkjet thing printer needs ‘genuine’ ink – and not the stuff you can refill.

Well i cannot buy it for it is not stocked.  Its special order even for the re fillers.  Lets not even discuss whsmith or a general retailer.

Portas faces another problem – the supermarket driving out the other supermarket, which if not built makes that place of high street not viable or makes it a place worth avoiding for ten years.

Banking and other visit drivers [Libraries?] which have been closed are also reasons not to visit physical locations.

So what have we learned ? well

  • I cannot buy ink for a printer on the high street
  • Tesco’s can drive competitors out of town
  • Charity shops (as pimped by portas) have an unfair advantage over businesses and do not pay tax

Portas will probably say that identical high streets are bad, ignore her Charity success as it makes high streets unattractive (second hand polariod cameras anybody)?

Since a camera that uses film (not the norm) )that you probably now have to special order from the internet makes that high street visit so worth it.

I love that irony.  Go save your high street Mary!
