Novatech sell computer bits, unfortunately i had a very sick server of seven years to replace as it started doing really odd things from kernal issues to freezing at regular intervals, so time to replace it . So i tried novatech who appeal for selling no os computers which suits linux people for reasons that are logical.
The stuff looks like the usual bits of components you find anywhere and i see something that i can adapt to be a server [essentially extra network cards] anyhow i try there web chat feature. I am connected to Plymouth and just to scare the living daylights out of somebody i mention linux in the chat subject.
As predicted ….. a very long delay ensues and a person who has a name starting with A whom seems to be a Microsoft employee, and grudgingly admits that bare bones is sold but its a bit weird this linux thing. Apparently selling stuff is not A’s thing who helpfully tells me there commision id if web order something which has now become a not going to happen event.
To be clear im not asking them (or A) to install anything, just is it compatible, i just want what they sell without me researching all of the components on the motherboard which can be time consuming and ok if i dont have ASAP issues i was facing. Since the zoo is pressuring me for a replacement its my best idea to get a competence rating.
The old server – fortunately i can get all the files i need off the old disk and I isolate it as a board problem.
A longer delay ensues where ‘A’ also is then helping a retail client in a shop – ‘A’ probably has never heard of Linux and i’m little disappointed but that’s life and my job is not to educate a computer salesman for free. So not being willing to risk a new supplier or ‘A’ and i go to my usual supplier whom have a product that suits us (a pc box only sans os) i see a review that says ok with linux and that does the business and are ok to deal with most of the time.
What gets me about novatech is the strange perception A had that Microsoft windows is required.
Maybe im too hard on the humans at novatech and did not give them a chance, but somehow if you sell barebones [or advertise and be known as such] then questions will be asked and its not like i am doing anything not practical. I like linux – i use it write this and use it serve stuff in work locations for many years.
Well no money for A or Novatech means they perhaps to need try harder with the linux suspects. Oh and the new box purchased not from them is now working and in use by the zoo.
