The pilot of the prequel to Battlestar Galactica aired sometime ago and i saw it only recently.
The society under exploration is more fractured and to its credit appears to follow the rulebook that bg laid down in its 12 colonies where the episode ‘dirty hands‘ (my blog) laid down who did what on which planet.
In contrast to Virtuality (my blog) the bluring between real life and holodeck was way better and although the pilot was fast and loose with the introductions in regard to focus a decent plot that follows the bg timeline and give room for a series was laid down.
However – there lies the problem we know how this ends so whether gluing a series onto battlestar placemarks may appear not to be such a good idea.
The styling is interesting a mix of classic hats and futuristic robots that appears to us as wrong and the car ‘mistake’ of battlestar have so been minimised.
This if done properly might be interesting, but somehow i think it will upset somebody that the setting of the show has a large influence in something most of us have seen.
It returns in Jan 2010, the dvd extras are rather brief and not worth the bother.
BUT I read though that the tv series is already having issues with ‘tits’ and so those will not be seen on tv in the pilot and comic con reports indicate that the ‘realism’ of the series is already been toned down.
Battlestar (bg) was considered too male, Caprica was supposed to be softer and also appeal to women. It seems that blood scared the the frak out of the tv network idiots, and any ‘hard’ discussion of say religion/politics etc is also a bit too scary for american tv.
Somehow New Caprica is going to be a bit retarded. Lets face it if boobs scare you , but war is ok – then perhaps caprica is in for some serious problems for if you cannot show those then all the other issues must seem very very scary to a tv exec*.
The messages are mixed though but s/f that appeals to both mass men and women is a very tall order to start with maybe this is a frak up before it can even be judged.
Mind you the clones of Battlestar are in production those ideas are in the wild so perhaps not all is lost.
